INSTITUTE OF EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING AND
ENGINEERING SEISMOLOGY
UNIVERSITY "SS CYRIL AND METHODIUS"
SKOPJE, REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA
EVENT:
OFFICIAL OPENING OF
INTERNATIONAL MASTER OF SCIENCE STUDIES IN
EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING
The first regional (international) Master of Science studies in the field
of Earthquake Engineering are being carried out at the Institute of Earthquake
Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IZIIS), University "Ss Cyril and
Methodius", Skopje, Republic of Macedonia.
The present international Master of Science studies have been established
in the cooperation with the Civil Engineering Faculty at the Ruhr-University,
Bochum, Germany, within the frameworks of the DAAD-Programme
for Scientific Cooperation of German Government, and within the frameworks of the Stability Pact for Southeast Europe.
The Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology(IZIIS),
was initially established with the aim to assist the urgent reconstruction of the city of Skopje, seriously damaged by the catastrophic earthquake in 1963.
Furthermore, IZIIS has created conditions for permanent progress in the field of science, applied research and education, including advanced training of staff in the course of 37 years of its existence.
As a well-known international centre, IZIIS has so far organized post-graduate studies leading to different scientific degrees, involving M.Sc., Ph.D. and specialized course-degrees.
This year, these studies are being realized by financial assistance of the German government for the first time as international post-graduate studies leading to M.Sc. degree in technical sciences for the countries of the Southeast Europe.
IZIIS is proud that the first post-graduate studies in the field of technical sciences within the University "Ss Cyril and Methodius" were organized in this renowned scientific centre in 1967.
The post graduate studies that are currently being carried out at IZIIS started on January 16, 2002, and will last two years.
Out of the 30 applied candidates, 24 graduated engineers from civil engineering departments and related technical departments from a number of countries in the Balkan region, Macedonia, Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania, as well as from Slovenia are enrolled.
The programme whose main objective is transfer of the latest knowledge in the field of Earthquake Engineering, the main criteria of design and analysis of structures in seismically active regions as well as familiarization with the European regulations for design and construction of seismically resistant structures, shall be basically realized by the academic staff of IZIIS in the IZIIS' premises.
In addition to the classical mode of education, electronic distant learning is to be introduced in these studies for the first time.
Within the frames of individual scientific topics, participation of professors from Ruhr-University, Bochum, Germany, the Civil Engineering Faculty in Skopje and other world known experts has been announced.
The official opening of the first international Master of Science IZIIS-DAAD course took place in the IZIIS' premises on January 22, 2002, at 11:00 h.
